    Behind our name

Kowloon itself means the 9 Dragons in Cantonese, an allegorical reference to our team’s ownership structure. Kowloon is also one of the most vibrant and dynamic areas of Hong Kong home to the only ICC approved ODI ground thus making this part of the city, the hub of cricket. Cantons is derived from the local language, Cantonese. The spirit behind the name Kowloon Cantons, beautifully brings together both aspects of what we value – Cricket & Hong Kong. Our name reflects our commitment to promoting cricket in Hong Kong.

    Mission Statement

Our tagline Cricket, Passion, Faith embodies the ethos of our team as well as its owners. Integrity is our biggest forte, we believe in the game and all its values and that is the benchmark we set for ourselves, on and off the field. We believe in Cricket as a sport, we have the Passion to take it forward in Hong Kong and we have the Faith in our team to always play hard and play fair.

    About the Franchise

The force behind the Kowloon Cantons is a consortium of 10 owners. Uniquely owned by 9 women and an ex-Hong Kong national captain, each owner brings a different skill set and a high degree of enthusiasm to the team. With Kowloon Cantons Cricket Company Ltd. being the corporate set up, each Director has assumed a part of the responsibility for the development of the team, the game and the tournament in Hong Kong.

In the 2016 season, Kowloon Cantons set the benchmark for the HKT20 Blitz by inviting Australian Captain Michael Clarke and young Nepalese player Sandeep Lamichchane to play. Sandeep was subsequently signed for the Western Suburb in Sydney. We are hoping to provide another such development platform this year.

List of international players for 2017

    Shahid Afridi - Injured

    Former Pakistan Captain

Afridi held the record for the fastest ODI century for almost 20 years until it was broken by AB De Villiers in 2015. The 36-year-old was the player of the tournament for the inaugural edition of the ICC World Twenty20 in 2007 and led Pakistan to the title in 2009 with match-winning performances in the semi-final and final.

On playing for the Kowloon Cantons, Shahid Afridi said, "I am looking forward to playing for the Kowloon Cantons in the HKT20 Blitz, I've heard good things about the tournament and look forward to playing in Hong Kong again, a place where I always enjoy the atmosphere, people and hospitality"

Shahid's message to the Kowloon Cantons

Due to a injury to his hand, Shahid could not come to play for Kowloon Cantons. He sent us his best wishes in a lovely video.

    Tymal Mills - Injured

    England Fast Bowler

Tymal Mills is one of the most explosive fast bowlers in English cricket, capable of speeds comfortably in excess of 90mph. England awarded him a T20I debut against Sri Lanka at the Ageas Bowl in 2016.

On playing for the Kowloon Cantons, Tymal Mills said, "I am delighted to have signed for Kowloon Cantons for the upcoming Hong Kong Blitz. It is great to be involved in such a young tournament that has the potential to grow the game significantly. Looking forward to linking up with the Kowloon Cantons family in March".

    Dwayne Smith

    West Indies Top-order Batsman

Tall, aggressive, and powerful, Dwayne Smith can rival the best hitters in the game when in top form, and is quite sought after in various Twenty20 leagues as well. He was part of a Mumbai Indians side that won the IPL and Champions League T20 double in 2013, moved to Chennai Super Kings in 2014 and was acquired by Gujarat Lions in 2016. His 73 off 51 balls led Islamabad United to the inaugural Pakistan Super League title in 2016.

On playing for the Kowloon Cantons, Dwayne Smith said, “I am really happy to have signed for Kowloon Cantons for the upcoming Hong Kong Blitz T20. The competition is only in its second year and I am excited to be involved and help grow the game in Hong Kong. I look forward to meeting my new team mates in March."

    Marlon Samuels

    West Indies Top-order Batsman

Marlon Samuels is a right-hander of immense ability. Against a top-class bowling attack in difficult conditions, Samuels scored 386 runs in five innings, with a century and three fifties. The highlight of his career was snappy 78 in the World Twenty20 final against Sri Lanka, which lifted West Indies to their first world title since the 1979 World Cup.

On playing for the Kowloon Cantons, Marlon Samuels said, “I’m pleased to have signed up for Kowloon Cantons in what looks to be an event that is getting bigger and better every year. It should be a cool few days for everyone involved”

    Yasir Arafat

    Pakistan All Rounder

Yasir Arafat is an all-rounder of typically Pakistani ethos: ideal for the attacking mood of the limited-overs format. His ability to generate pace and swing can always turn a game. He is also considered a dangerous lower-order plunderer, good enough to strike five first-class hundreds as well as one in List A cricket.

On playing for the Kowloon Cantons, Yasir Arafat said, “I am really looking forward to playing for Kowloon Cantons in the HKT20 Blitz and working with a talented bunch of players. I always enjoy tournaments in Hong Kong – It’s a place that is hugely passionate about cricket and the fans are always so knowledgeable about the game."

    Ashar Zaidi

    English County Player

Ashar Zaidi has carved out a niche for himself in England. Signed by Sussex after plying his trade with Accrington in the Lancashire League, he spent two seasons at Hove before making Essex his second county in 2016

    Calum MacLeod

    Scotland Top-order Batsman

Two centuries in succession for Calum MacLeod in 2014 played a major part in Scotland's qualification for the 2015 World Cup. When he acted as a substitute fielder for England in an Ashes Test in 2009 he became the first Gaelic speaker to appear in a Test.

On playing for the Kowloon Cantons, Calum Macleod said, "I'm delighted to be playing for the Kowloon Cantons in the HKT20 blitz. It's an exciting tournament for both Hong Kong cricket and all of associate cricket. The crowds and people will really make this a great tournament to be involved in."

We are all about the development of Cricket as a sport in Hong Kong. Taking that forward, Kowloon Cantons are proud to partner with Cricket Hong Kong and with various schools, International as well as local, to familiarise children with the game.

    School Clinics

With the T20 Blitz growing bigger over the year, the Kowloon Cantons decided to involve the community and increase the reach of the game to children. Reiterating our commitment to promoting cricket in Hong Kong, we launched a community outreach program in schools, both international and local, where Kowloon Cantons players spent time coaching children in the sport.

The program covered 12 schools in the city ranging from International schools to local schools. The age of students participating ranged from 10-15 years across the schools with approximately 30% being girls.

The sheer enthusiasm and willingness of the children in trying to learn a new game and looking to excel in it was very rewarding. One of the schools had ethic minority girls clad in their traditional attire eager to play, in another, the whole cricket team comprised of Chinese students.

This is the passion for which we became a part of the HK T20 Blitz, to see cricket becoming a popular sport in Hong Kong and this is our ethos.
